DICKINSON DANCE: HOUR OF LEAD OCTOBER 18, 2007
Another work of performance art inspired by the poetry of Emily Dickinson is Stevan Novakovich’s dance piece, “Hour of Lead.” This work premiered at California State University – Long Beach in October, 2007. Says the Daily 49er:
In the center of the stage, there was a thick, white wall on which the dancers focused their motions, pressing, twisting and supporting their bodies against its surface. Functioning as the verbal or musical backdrop, the voice of an older woman reciting lines of poetry in which Dickinson explores the nature of pain was projected into the audience.
The title is taken from Dickinson’s “After great pain a formal feeling comes”, a poem we haven’t covered yet at Daily Dickinson.
Though she has a reputation for the ethereal, bolstered no doubt by her spinster reputation and white dress, Dickinson could be a surprisingly physical poet, particularly on the topic of pain. Note, for example, The Mystery of Pain, in which she explores the all-consuming nature of pain: pain has “no future but itself,” consuming everything with its white heat. It is entirely appropriate that Dickinson’s pain poetry should be explored in dance.

My Ballet Intrestique class is all about creating a mature, safe, dancing space in which classically trained ballet dancers, are once gain free to dance from their pure place of love and passion for movement.
This class is simply a place of refuge into the world of self discovery, love, positivity and absolute acceptance! Move to the rhythm of Mantras and nourish your body, spirit and mind trough the Unifying power of Yoga!
Please feel free to go to the Video Gallery section on my website, to view a first rough cut of my newest short film " The Great Train Rush" ! FYI this film was shot at a single site, in only 10 hours total, with choreography and movement set on the dancers on the shoot itself! I did not have the access to my dancers in the film, who were stranger to me and my work, as much as I was a stranger to them as a choreographer and a film maker. In that sense, this film is a creative example of instantaneous choreographing, directing and shooting on the spot! Nothing was preplanned except for the general storyboarding of the potential frames, their size and angles. The film was edited in the period of 12 straight hours, and a day later was prescreened at the Cape Charles Experimental Film Virginia. This is still a rough cut version and a work in progress.
